Opinion: LaVar Ball and the Big Baller Brand

Who is the most famous member of the Ball Family? It’s LaVar Ball. He snatches the attention of everyone every chance he gets with his outrageous comments and antics. If you don’t know LaVar Ball, which is hard to say, he is the father of three sons: Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo. Lonzo is a rookie in the NBA on the Los Angeles Lakers, LiAngelo is a freshman at UCLA, and LaMelo attends Chino Hills High School. Each son has grabbed the attention of many, Lonzo being the top point guard in the NCAA, LiAngelo scoring 72 points in a single game, and LaMelo scoring 92 points in a single game. The talent of LaVar´s children has helped him promote his shoe and clothing brand, The Big Baller Brand.

His sons have helped build the popularity of his brand but his outrageous statements have made it over-the-top. He has made ridiculous claims that Lonzo is better than two-time MVP Stephen Curry, the current MVP Russell Westbrook, and LeBron James. LaVar has made statements expressing that his sons deserve a billion dollar sneaker deal. Every shoe company denied his request, however, so he created his own sneaker.  He made additional comments explaining that he could destroy Michael Jordan in a one on one competition. Although his remarks have been crazy, he has been the hot topic of seemingly every recent sports discussion. Despite this tremendous fame LaVar has enjoyed, some of his comments have sparked great controversy and were not thought through thoroughly. After his son Lonzo and UCLA lost to Kentucky in the NCAA tournament he was livid and was quoted saying, “Realistically you can’t win no championship with three white guys because the foot speed is too slow.”  Now this comment was not only disrespectful but was also a little racist. He goes on with saying that his brand will be up there with Nike soon, and yet another time he was quoted telling a woman “stay in yo lane” after asking about the profits of his sons´ $495 pair of sneakers.

Although he has made many disrespectful comments, many consider his actions hilarious, and LaVar Ball has been very successful at gaining publicity for his company brand and popularity for his sons. He is criticized for being annoying, but a father who cares a lot about his sons and boasts about his children should not be a problem and should instead be recognized positively. He is one the smartest fathers to ever do it. He has been on ESPN multiple times, interviewed for many shows, and even been on WWE Monday Night Raw. He is not selfish or trying to live his dreams through his children, but rather a loving father who wants nothing but the best for his children.
